Salve a tutti
La mia cinquantennale  amicizia con Rick,  nato in Italia ma suddito di Sua
Maestà dove si è trasferito  fin dal tempo dei Beatles,   aggiunge un
contributo alle ricerche sulla parola "rugger"
Copio e incollo la sua emai, in risposta al mio quesito.

Here you go - in English, as requested!

*Rugger* - is a colloquial term for the game of rugby. The English love this
kind of affectionate abbreviation, which is applied to anything from people
to objects. The English vocabulary is one of the richest among the Western
European languages, and there are many words for, say, one object, with a
certain status in the society associated with it (lower class, often also
referred to as "working class"  - middle class - upper class). During the
early days of the Prince William's relationship with his girlfriend
Kate Middleton, the newspapers reported that Kate and her immediate
family were using typical "middle class" terms in her speech, rather than
their "upper class" equivalents. This also applies to the word "rugger":- it
is used mainly by people of a certain class (and certain age) for the sport,
which is already played by people from a better level in society, who
sometimes use it simply in order to identify themselves as a member of this
class. There is also a regional aspect to this, and you will only hear it
used in the "wealthy" south of England, not in the north.

The players of the game can also be called "ruggers" (plural s), again with
the above comments about the usage of the word in mind. Over here, when
asking people which sport they play, you can simply say: "Are you a golfer?
cricketer? swimmer? footballer?" Or, comment: "Oh, you are golfer?!" The
press may produce headlines like "The ruggers are ready to fight the All
Blacks" - yet in normal conversation we do tend to refer to "rugby players".

Another curiosity which you may enjoy:- the word *soccer* comes from the
word (football) *association.* And, Australian footballers are humourously
referred to as *socceroos (soccer - kangaroo).*

Finally, linguistic associations may also play a part in this: the adjective
*rugged* - means somethings rough, worn, aged, weathered, which somehow
seems to fit the nature of the sport quite well. (finisco in italiano)
Anche perche' nel gergo universitario ci sono molti riferimenti alla parola
stracci ad esempio : il giorno degli stracci ( che e' un giorno particolare
nel calendario universitario ).
Quando lavoravo alla Rank , eravamo un gruppo di rugbisti abbastanza
numeroso , il nostro capo ,valente giocatore di hockey , ogni Lunedi' ci
accoglieva con la frase ........And how about the Ruggers today
 (riferendosi a noi acciaccati)  are  we going to have a day of work ?
Il mio dottore  (un vero tipical gentleman degli anni passati) mi accoglieva
sempre con la frase -...... And how are  you  getting on with the
old rugger  , my old friend !!-  Nota che la parola OLD non vuol dire
VECCHIO , ma  CARO.

Naturalmente , come succede in questo genere di ricerche , ci sara' qualcuno
 ch ti dira' il contrario. Comunque
 con queste notizie e ricorda ,  l'Inglese ....come il Napoletano non e'
solo una lingua , ma una espressione storica , con varie valenze . Guai a
non capirlo.
