[RUGBYLIST] Coppa Garibaldi

bella iniziativa ...................e credo che debba essere dato il merito ai transalpini e non me ne voglia il presidente.
3  anni fa quando giocammo a grenoble quella disgraziata partita con la A con un punteggio da dimenticare e una francia stratosferica, parlammo a lungo con il presidente del comitato che era il vicepresidente della federazione francese e ora nel comitato per la coppa del mondo, allora dicevo parlammo di un rapporto che loro volevano instaurare tra i comitati per incontri di alto livello e l'idea di una coppa particolare venne , credo in quella occasione per cementare l'ipotesi di una collaborazione tra i due paesi latini del 6 nazioni.
Ma noi ancora non eravamo pronti la loro idea a sentir dire di uno dei vertici della nostra federazione non era nemmeno da portare all'attenzione del presidente.
Per fortuna qualcuno è lungimirante e la cosa ha preso corpo.

  Italy and France play for Garibaldi

  When Italy and France meet this year, they will for the first time be playing for the Garibaldi Trophy as part of the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi. 

  Garibaldi is regarded as the man who changed Italy from a "geographical expression" into a country. He marched around getting rid of all the little states and is regarded as the father of the republic. The pope did not like him but and eventual treaty brought reconciliation with the papacy and independence for the Vatican. As Garibaldi was born over the border in Nice, became a general in the French army during the Franco-Prussian War and it was from France that he "invaded" Italy. 

  Then, too, Italian rugby is much influenced by France. 

  England and Scotland have the Calcutta Cup and the Four Home Unions the Triple Crown, now a tangible trophy. There was nothing for the other two but now they have the Garibaldi Trofeo/Trophée/Trophy. The International Rugby Board approved the trophy on 6 December 2006. 

  The designer of the trophy is himself interesting - Jean-Pierre Rives, in his time the blond French warrior with blood trickling down his face, captain of France 32 times. He is now a professional sculptor and he designed this new trophy.
